The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
