The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
