Over recent Cops, host nations have embraced traditional gatherings inspired by indigenous practices. At the upcoming conference, delegates will be invited to a collaborative work group, a local expression originating from the native Tupi-Guarani that refers to a community coming together to tackle a shared task.

Preserving woodlands intact offers far greater value to the global community than cutting them down, but traditional market systems do not reflect this fact. Low-income populations residing in woodland regions, along with the administrations of timber-rich states, often find it difficult to avoid harvesting these ecological treasures for immediate benefits through logging, livestock grazing or farmland development.

The Conservation Financing Mechanism seeks to alter these financial calculations by providing payments to nations and local groups to prevent deforestation. For the Brazilian leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, this constitutes the primary focus for the upcoming conference. He hopes the program could expand to a worth of 125 billion dollars (95 billion pounds), with $25bn potentially coming from developed country governments and public institutions, while the majority would be obtained through private investors and financial markets. So far, the initiative has achieved around five billion dollars. The Britain is one major economy that has failed to contribute.

Ethical Progress Assessment
